Relief at appointment of 40 new nurses at Royal Hospital

The Health Minister’s announcement yesterday of 40 more nurses to care for emergency patients at the Royal Victoria Hospital highlights the pressures staff there have been under for some time, it is claimed. Edwin Poots made the announcement after months of intense media coverage and political debate regarding what some claim are dangerously over-stretched resources at the Royal’s casualty department. However, UUP health spokesman Roy Beggs said the volume of new positions announced underlined the extent of under-resourcing at the hospital up until now. The minister added: “I am under no illusion that it will take time to make a difference. I don’t expect change to happen overnight – but I do expect progress to be made. It is clear that there has been progress to an extent but much more needs to be done and we need to maintain the momentum that has been built. As I have said … Continue reading

Beggs Welcomes Speedy Response by Council to Remove Litter at Fisherman’s Quay

Roy Beggs has welcomed the speedy response by Carrickfergus Borough Council to remove the significant build-up of plastic bottles and litter from the popular Fisherman’s Quay area. Roy Beggs said, “The winter storms have deposited a considerable amount plastic bottles and general litter onto the coast line area around Fisherman’s Quay to make it unsightly.  This is a very popular spot adjacent to the Marine Highway.    I would like to thanks Carrickfergus BC Environmental Services for the speedy removal of the waste material which included several car tyres and hundreds of plastic bottles. This accumulation of waste has re-enforced the importance of us all disposing of items safely and recycle material where possible.   Plastic litter which makes its way to our water courses is likely to end up in the sea, damage wildlife and producing the unsightly deposits on our coast line. Tourism is becoming increasingly important to the local … Continue reading
