Information day at Horizon SureStart

Barnardo’s Horizon SureStart in Carrick held an information morning for local elected representatives and staff from other agencies and organisations. SureStart is based in Sunnylands Primary School and works with over 400 families across five wards in Carrick: Sunnylands, Northland, Clipperstown, Love Lane and Killycrot. Beggs Welcomes 72% Decrease in Use of ‘Single Use’ Carrier Bags

East Antrim Ulster Unionist representative Roy Beggs MLA has welcomed news that the carrier bag levy has raised £1.3 million since its introduction on 8th April 2013. Roy Beggs, a former member of the Environment Committee at Stormont, said “It is welcome news – I am led to believe that the use of single carrier bags has decreased by 72%, which means that there are a staggering 215 million less bags in circulation. The charge on carrier bags, which is 5p per single use bag, goes towards the NGO Challenge Fund. This fund goes back into the community and funds environmental projects.” Northern Ireland Environment Link (NIEL) administers the NGO Challenge Fund on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA). Applications from eligible groups are invited to the NGO Challenge Fund and must be submitted to challengefund@nienvironmentlink.org by noon on Friday 3rd October 2014. Street lights at OAPs’ homes in Northern Ireland won’t be fixed because of cuts

Senior citizens in Northern Ireland could be left in the dark this winter as the result of Stormont budget cuts, the Belfast Telegraph can reveal By Noel McAdam – 06 September 2014 Senior citizens in Northern Ireland could be left in the dark this winter as the result of Stormont budget cuts, the Belfast Telegraph can reveal. Street lights close to pensioners’ bungalows that are damaged or go out are unlikely to be repaired or replaced. The Ulster Unionist Party has warned that the savings by one department could mean increased costs for the already-stretched health service. Little shop of horrors: Undercover footage of the innocent-looking Larne shop …

By Christopher Woodhouse – 05 September 2014 This is the innocent-looking shop that is peddling potentially lethal drugs to young people from across Northern Ireland. Northern Lights in Larne calls itself an “indoor gardening store”, but is doing a roaring trade in “legal highs”. The chemicals are copies of illegal drugs that give users the same hit, but have formulas tweaked to get around the UK’s anti-drugs laws. Teenagers from as far afield as Omagh and Dungannon are known to have beaten a path to the door of Northern Lights, on a quiet side street of the County Antrim town. The shop, which advertises online, freely sells packets of Magic Dragon, a highly addictive type of synthetic cannabis, and Pink Panther pills, which are said to mimic the effect of ecstasy.
