Altnagelvin Speech

Mr Beggs: I thank the Members for bringing forward this important motion.  I, too, rise to support the motion.  I recognise publicly the important regional role that Altnagelvin Hospital plays and will play increasingly in the future, not only for the city of Londonderry and the north-west region but, as has been said, its linkages with other hospitals such as Coleraine and the South West Hospital.  There is the opportunity for the mutual benefit of the regional centre, not only for the people of Northern Ireland but for the people of Donegal.  Collectively, a much better service can be provided for everyone. Beggs Welcomes Funding for Autism NI Work in Carrickfergus and Newtownabbey

Ulster Unionist East Antrim representative Roy Beggs MLA has welcomed news that Autism NI has been successfully awarded £699,810 through the Big Lottery Funds “Reach Out: Supporting Families” programme to support people with autism and their families. Roy Beggs MLA said “Autism NI do great work in Northern Ireland and through the grant of nearly £700,000, they will be able to extend and build upon their work in East Antrim. Their project will help to increase awareness of autism and help young people with autism and their families by providing advice and support. The scheme is also proactive in offering support to those who may not have received their final diagnosis, therefore speeding up the process where engagement can occur with Autism NI.” Autism NI, which supports people with autism and their families, will use the grant to run the Reaching Autism families Together project. Beggs Urges East Antrim Public Engagement in DRD Bicycle Strategy Consultation

Ulster Unionist representative Roy Beggs MLA has urged residents of East Antrim to get involved in the Department of Regional Developments bicycle strategy consultation in order to have their views heard, which will shape the future of bike provision in Northern Ireland. Roy Beggs said “ The Department are hosting a series of public meetings in order to hear your views about the Minister, Danny Kenendy MLAs, draft bicycle strategy. This is your chance to give feedback on cycling provision and infrastructure. Beggs Expresses Disappointment at Closure of Carrickfergus First Trust Branch

Roy Beggs MLA has expressed his disappointment at the recent announcement from the First Trust Bank that they are to close their Carrickfergus branch as part of a streamlined, more cost-effective and efficient drive within the organisation. Ulster Unionist Party MLA, Mr Roy Beggs said “I have written to the First Trust Bank to express my disappointment at the announcement and I have also highlighted the inconvenience that the move will have on many of the First Trust users in Carrickfergus.  I can only urge customers who deem themselves to be inconvenienced by the streamlining move, to show their discontent by exploring other banks and building societies in the area.”

Beggs welcomes carrier bag revenue

East Antrim Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has welcomed a revenue of £1.3 million raised since the introduction of a carrier bag levy last April. Mr Beggs, a former member of the Environment Committee, at Stormont, said: “It is welcome news. I am led to believe that the use of single carrier bags has decreased by 72 per cent, which means that there are a staggering 215 million less bags in circulation. “The charge on carrier bags, which is five pence per single use bag, goes towards the NGO Challenge Fund. This fund goes back into the community and funds environmental projects.” Northern Ireland Environment Link (NIEL) administers the NGO Challenge Fund on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA).
