Under a spotlight: The Stormont expenses claims that are facing scrutiny

Politicians at Stormont are under fresh pressure after the revelations about their expenses 27 November 2014 As police move in to investigate, Rebecca Black takes a look at the allegations made against some of our political parties in the two recent documentaries shown on BBC1 NI. Sinn Fein Sinn Fein politicians, whether they are Deputy First Minister earning £120,000, minister earning £86,000, junior minister earning £60,000 or MLA earning £48,000, take home a salary equivalent to the average industrial wage of around £26,000. The remainder of the money goes to Sinn Fein, which is estimated across Ireland at £2.2m. Over the past 10 years, 36 different current and former Sinn Fein MLAs claimed about £700,000 in total through Stormont expenses to pay Research Services Ireland Ltd. Smoking cessation advice ‘still online’

East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs has spoken of his disappointment that the Public Health Agency’s Smokers Helpline will cease to be operational at the end of this month. The Ulster Unionist representative said: “It is disappointing news that the Smokers Helpline service (0808 812 8008) will cease on December 31; however, it is important to note that www.want2stop.info is still available for information, advice and support on stopping smoking.” A spokesperson for the PHA commented: “The demand for the smokers’ helpline has decreased in recent times, with smokers choosing to seek help from more online-based resources. “As a result of this fall in demand, a decision was taken to close the helpline in order to focus attention on smokers’ preferred methods of seeking help. “The Public Health Agency has a range of stop smoking services available to those who want to quit, including advice and information on www.want2stop.info and through … Continue reading

Beggs Urges Those who Want to Quit Smoking to check out www.want2stop.info

Roy Beggs MLA has spoken of his disappointment that the Public Health Agencies Smokers Helpline will cease to be operational on the 31st December 2014. The Ulster Unionist MLA said “It is disappointing news that the Smokers Helpline service (0808 812 8008) will cease on the 31st December 2014, however it is important to note that www.want2stop.info is still available for information, advice and support on stopping smoking.  I would urge those who are thinking of making ‘quitting smoking’ their New Year’s resolution, to check out the website.” A PHA representative added “In recent times, despite many smokers availing of specialist stop smoking services, the number of people contacting the Smokers Helpline has been minimal, hence the decision to close the service.” Ends

Roy Beggs MLA Delivers Christmas Cheer to Postal Workers

Roy Beggs MLA passed on Christmas greetings to postmen and women at the Larne Delivery Office Christmas is Royal Mail’s busiest time of the year and Mr Beggs saw the hard work and dedication of postal workers to sort and deliver festive mail The last recommended posting dates for Christmas are:  Second Class – Thursday 18th December and First Class- Saturday 20th December Roy Beggs MLA has visited Royal Mail’s Larne delivery office to pass on Christmas wishes and encouragement to postmen and women at their busiest time of year.
