Arson attacks must end- Beggs

East Antrim Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs has condemned the latest arson attack in Larne and has called on the public to pass on details of any suspicious activity to the police to help lead to the prosecution of those involved. Roy Beggs MLA said: “This latest arson attack has all the hallmarks of a tit-for-tat attack between feuding criminals.   Another car has been set on fire and, with the risk of an exploding petrol tank, homes have been endangered along with the lives of local residents. “I would urge the public who may have seen anyone involved in these ongoing attacks or anything suspicious to report information to the PSNI or the confidential Crime Stoppers number 0800 555 111. Arrests as car is set on fire outside house in Larne

Image copyright Press Eye Image caption Police said the stolen silver Peugeot was set on fire outside the house Two men have been arrested after a stolen car was “set on fire and abandoned” against the front door of a house in Larne, County Antrim. The house was badly damaged in the incident in the Killyglen Road area of the town on Sunday afternoon. The men, aged 24 and 34, are being questioned about the attack which was reported to police shortly before 16:45 BST. It follows a series of arson attacks in Larne over recent days. On Monday, a hair salon in the town was extensively damaged when a car was driven through its metal shutters. It is not yet known if the Killyglen Road incident is linked to the previous attacks. Call for more proactive approach from PSNI to end wave of attacks …

Sinn Fein spokesman Oliver McMullan East Antrim’s political representatives have called for the spate of attacks which have engulfed Larne to end now. Disgust was expressed by all the parties, with calls for the PSNI to be more visible. Local DUP MP Sammy Wilson said he had been contacted by frightened constituents about what was going on. “Apart from the bad publicity these actions have brought to the town, the impact of the violence has been felt by the wider community because people fear that they and their property will be targeted next,” he said. “I have been contacted by neighbours of some of those attacked and they are obviously scared that they will either be targeted wrongly or be caught in the crossfire. “It is important that the police step up their presence in the area.” Party colleague Gordon Lyons MLA said Larne had “been in the headlines for … Continue reading

Geordie Gilmore murder: Appeals for calm in Carrick as fears grow of an escalating loyalist feud

Warning: Mr Murray yesterday A former UDA commander who died after being shot in broad daylight as part of a loyalist feud had been seen in the public gallery in a court just hours before he was gunned down. George ‘Geordie’ Gilmore (44), who died in hospital yesterday, was in his car when he was hit in the neck, torso and leg after several shots were fired at point-blank range by an unmasked gunman. Police have launched a murder investigation following the attack that happened around 2.15pm on Monday in Pinewood Avenue in Carrickfergus’s Woodburn estate. Eyewitnesses said a gunman fled the scene on foot, although two men may have been involved. It also emerged that one of the bullets fired during the murder missed and went through the front door of a property.
