Condolences for bereaved families

Local politicians have expressed their shock and sadness at the fatal shooting of two men at a farmhouse near Glenarm.

Sinn Féin MLA for east Antrim Oliver McMullan, who knew both of the deceased – Arthur Gibson and Michael Murphy – said the pair had been “very close” and described the deaths as a double tragedy.

Mr McMullan said: “This is a tragedy not only for the families but also for the community. People are in a state of shock as both men were well known within this tight knit community.

“This has obviously been a traumatic time for both families and they have also had to endure being the focus of media attention since this tragic incident.”

East Antim Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs said: “In the aftermath of such a shocking incident we all should keep in our thoughts and prayers the family of the deceased at this very difficult time.”

Meanwhile, MP for East Antrim Sammy Wilson said: “The thoughts of the community will be with those who have been so tragically bereaved. In a close knit community such as Glenarm, the impact of this will be felt by everyone.”
