A former UUP MP is to take part in the launch of a book by the man he once described as “the only republican I would ever call a friend”.

Roy Beggs first encountered Fianna Fail man Flan Garvey, who went on to become the mayor of Clare, in the 1980s and the pair developed a warm relationship despite their very different political backgrounds.

Mr Garvey’s memoir Inside Minds North And South: Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right, charts his journey from strong republican roots to a time when men he once believed he hated were among his closest friends.

Mr Beggs said: “Flan is a unique character. He is the best ambassador that Clare tourism ever authorised.”

Inside Minds North And South: Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right by Flan Garvey is published by Stop The Press Publishing.
