Beggs Calls for Executive Decisions in Wake of FG Wilson Job Losses

Ulster Unionist Party MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has expressed his shock at the scale of the job losses announced by engineering firm FG Wilson. The East Antrim MLA said: “In the wake of the initial announcement of redundancies at FG Wilson, I met with their Northern Ireland Operations Manager Robert Kennedy and other senior management at the Larne factory earlier this summer. I was made me aware of the pressures they were experiencing regarding their smaller Generator sets, which had resulted in the announcement of the earlier job losses and their decision to establish a production facility in Asia. But like everyone else, I have been shocked by this second announcement and the scale of redundancies proposed. It seems amazing that relatively recently the firm were announcing significant profits, investing in new production lines, and taking on extra staff. It appears that the financial crisis in the Euro-zone has accelerated … Continue reading

Beggs Welcomes Park and Ride facility at Jordanstown Train Halt

Roy Beggs MLA has welcomed the investment of £600.000 from the Department of Regional Development to develop a park and ride facility at Jordanstown Railway Station. Roy Beggs said, “Many commuters live beyond walking distance on their local railway station, and the provision of improved park and ride facilities is vital to encourage greater use of public transport. I am aware that the lack of car parking provision around Jordanstown has caused tension with residents in the past and so I believe this new park and ride facility will also be welcomed by local residents. The new CAF 4000 trains which are now operating on the Larne line are proving to be very popular and are encouraging even more people to avoid the traffic congestion and Office City Centre car parking costs. The provision of additional park and ride facilities will enable even more people to take the benefits of … Continue reading

Roy Questions Ulster Bank CEO at Stormont Committee

Transcript of exchange between Roy Beggs MLA and Jim Brown CEO Ulster Bank at Stormont, 5/7/12 Mr Beggs: You said that you still have five days of back processing to do. I should put on record my thanks to your front line staff. You have put them in an impossible situation, and I thank them for the way in which they are trying to deal with it. A constituent of mine contacted me yesterday evening. He is a pensioner, and he was trying to transfer funds to make sure that his mortgage payment went through. There was no visibility, and it was not possible for him to do that. A businessman e-mailed me this morning. He lodged — sorry, placed — some cheques with you on 11 June, some of which have still not cleared. When will there be online visibility so that people can see the progress that you … Continue reading

Beggs Questions Ulster Bank Top Brass

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs Jnr took the opportunity this morning to question Ulster Bank senior managers at a Stormont committee meeting. East Antrim MLA and Finance committee member Roy Beggs MLA said: “It appears that finally a significant amount of effort is being expended by Ulster Bank and RBS management in trying to resolve this issue and providing additional information to customers through the additional 100 staff that have been drafted in to support local customers. Front line staff must be commended for their efforts to assist customers given the almost impossible situation that they have been placed in since the loss of the banking IT system.” “The Ulster Bank crisis has come at huge cost to customers, individual businesses and even non-Ulster Bank customers who are awaiting payment from individuals and businesses who bank with the Ulster Bank.  It will also have come at a considerable cost to … Continue reading
