Where are Local Plans to Replace Care Homes? asks Beggs
Speaking in a debate at Stormont about care for the Elderly, Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has expressed his alarm at the lack of specific local plans to replace Residential Care Homes such as Lisgarel in Larne, Joymount in Carrickfergus and Clonmore in Newtownabbey- which have again been earmarked for closure by Health Minister Edwin Poots. Mr Beggs told the Assembly: “In my response to the Transforming Your Care proposals, I urged caution regarding the proposed changes to services for the elderly. I also expressed concern at the high risk of the flawed proposal to close so many homes so rapidly. I highlighted issues such as the increasing need for respite care in this new model, where domiciliary care increasingly becomes the primary source of retaining our older population in their own home. With our growing older population, I believe that there will also be a need for increased … Continue reading

Beggs urges consumers to shop around following Power NI 18% electricity price hike
Roy Beggs, Ulster Unionist MLA, has urged electricity users to send a message to Power NI by considering alternative suppliers, following their announcement of an 18% increase in electricity prices. Roy Beggs MLA said, ‘The increase of 18% in electricity charges by Power NI, will have come as a major blow to many struggling consumers. It is time that consumers consider other suppliers as Power NI, who supply 80% of NI consumers are continuing to maximise their profits, restricted only by the tariff limit set by the utility regulator. I would urge all electricity users to look for savings by consider the charges of the different electricity suppliers. The Consumer Council provides a price comparison table and also good independent advice on switching suppliers. It is now easier than ever to switch suppliers. I would urge electricity users to avail of the open competition and send a message by considering … Continue reading

Beggs calls for a cap to be placed on interest levels on pay day loans
Ulster Unionist MLA, Roy Beggs has called for a cap to be placed on the level of interest which payday loan companies can charge. Speaking after the launch of NICVA and Advice NI’s “ Expensive Lending in Northern Ireland” discussion paper, Roy said: “From first-hand experience of people attending my constituency surgeries in East Antrim, I am aware of and extremely concerned by the growing number of people taking out high interest loans from pay day loan companies or, worse, illegal money lenders.’ “I would firstly like to see increased resources for the advice sector which would bolster their ability to provide debt advice. In the longer term I think we need to see a cap placed on the level of interest which payday loans companies can charge. Currently, loans which come with an extremely high level of interest may only be a short term fix for people who have … Continue reading
