108 MLAs were elected to Stormont earlier this month The election is over and we now have an election break until 2019 – although there is the EU referendum coming up on 23 June. We were fairly pleased with our pre NI Assembly election polls, all the trends were correct in our last Opinion Panel poll (see previous articles). Yes – some of the figures were a bit out from the actual final figures, but remember our last poll was taken 10 days from the election, so there was still plenty of time for changes of minds. In any case, we always stress that it’s the trends that count – and our final poll showed the correct trends: DUP going up, SDLP UUP declining, TUV rising (although the TUV had no increase in terms of seats, their NI-Wide vote went up), Green Party and People before Profit going up. Subjects covered included Northern Ireland political leader ratings, party election percentage poll scores, and the upcoming EU referendum on June 23. Over 1,800 members of our Opinion Panel were invited to participate, 1,168 full responses were received, and 1,082 responses considered in terms of the final results. Orangeman and East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs has spoken out against the burning of tyres and political posters on bonfires. The UUP representative also called for greater awareness of the values of the Glorious Revolution, and has urged that greater consideration be given to others. Mr Beggs called for an end to burning tyres on health and safety grounds. “The annual Twelfth of July celebrations should be exactly that – an opportunity to celebrate our proud heritage,” he stated. “This should be a time of gaining community support for the values of the Glorious Revolution rather than endangering the health and well-being of some in the local community by burning tyres on bonfires. “I support the tradition of the Twelfth bonfires but they should be wood only.” The local representative warned that tyres burned in an uncontrolled manner could release carcinogenic dioxins, endangering the health of the local community.
