Poor state of mental health unit calls for urgent action

Editor’s Viewpoint August 7 2017 Once again Holywell Hospital near Antrim has made headlines for all the wrong reasons, and Roy Beggs MLA has further underlined the assessment by the local health trust that it is no longer fit for purpose. Mr Beggs’ comments also echo the persistent concerns raised locally and nationally about mental health provision in general. Of course, budgets are tight, but the Department of Health must urgently examine the worrying situation at Holywell. It is also incumbent on the politicians to get back to work at Stormont and to do something positive about Holywell, and so many other pressing needs. Common sense needs to prevail on e-bikes – Beggs

East Antrim Ulster Unionist Party MLA Roy Beggs who had been contacted by constituents from Larne and Carrickfergus has expressed his concern about delays in up-dating regulations governing the use of electrical bicycles that is inhibiting their use in NI and has contacted the Departmental of Infrastructure Permanent Secretary. Mr Beggs MLA said “I had been contacted by constituents in Larne relating to the circumstances of Lynette McHendry, whose friends had raised around £2,000 for her to purchase an e-bike so she can cycle with her family and friends during her current illness. I was shocked to learn from constituents that Lynette was unable to get her electric bike following the retailers recognition that current NI regulations treated e-bikes in the same light as motorised vehicles. This means that you would require a driving license, insurance and a number plate to use the electrical bicycle in NI!” The Department of … Continue reading

Let us hope Celtic v Linfield match is memorable for right reasons

Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers Editor’s Viewpoint July 14 2017 Football is a game that arouses passions like no other and it is unfortunate that this evening’s showpiece Champions League clash between Linfield and Celtic will not see both sets of fans at Windsor Park voicing their fervent support for their heroes. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, who is from Northern Ireland, is understandably disappointed his team’s supporters will not be there because of safety fears, but the creation of a fanzone in the west of the city for them may be an innovative compromise. Whatever the result, the hope is that football will be the winner and that Northern Ireland does not score an own goal through adverse publicity.
